Originally I had considered a full tube cage and frame but after RCGuy CNC’d the first edition of my Jowett’s Kustom frame rails there was no way I wasn’t using the first set on this truck! I combined these with an RCGuy skid plate, drilled for both the RC4WD R2 and AX10 transmissions.
In the early stages of the project it was purchased by one of our members (Curly) on the condition that I would finish the project as I had originally intended…even when asked for his input he’d simply say, hey pal…You’re building it! The process was a blast and the two of had fun talking details.
I was really pleased with the way the cage turned out, I think the two piece body worked great. The back end is permanently attached to the cage with 2mm hardware and the front clip and doors are removable to gain access to the battery and electronics.
Much of the tube is hidden by the body and interior panels, the only visible tube work is the old school roll bar, cross bar for the doors and main hoop around the windshield and dash. I made the roll bar out of 1/4" tube to give it a meaty look, it slides down onto the 4 3/16" pegs on the floor. The floor boards and interior sit down over the pegs and the roll bar holds everything down.
The interior is scratch built out of styrene, the floor; firewall & dash are modular and bolt onto the cage for easy access and modifications. The interior panels were accented with to match the exterior colors. I featured a set of the new RCGuy Aluminum Crawler Buckets and after a bit of heat and a small trim added my usual Wild Willy character for the driver.
To finish it off the polycarbonate body received 12 coats of translucent red, backed with 3 layers of gold and1 white making one of my favourite Candy Apple Red colours to date.
In late September of this year Off my Rockers changed hands again, keep an eye out for future additions to the truck by the proud new owner...Pathfinder95
