As a kid I used to sit and stare at the Bruiser, then the Mountaineer. Then the Highlift came out. I searched for videos on You Tube, and found RC Rock Crawlers, I was hooked.
My Yota Scaler is my forth crawler build, and my favorite. It started out with an original Hilux chassis and TLT axles. The body had to be a Mountaineer. The first mock-up had bruiser leafs front and rear. It didn’t have the flex I was looking for, so I swapped out the rear leafs for a four link set-up with EZ’s designs axle truss, fat rock “Chino” skid plate and home built links. WOW! The R2 2 speed was a gift from my brother for Christmas. TLT axles are fitted with aluminum spool diffs and 1.9 Mudslingers to keep them off the rocks.
The accessories have been a blast to design and build. The storage box was my first project; it’s made of styrene, and scale checker plate. To fill it, I made some jumper cables, a spare fan belt, some rope bundles, bungee cords, tool box and gas cans. I picked up some other stuff on e-bay, tools, lantern, flashlight, axes and a fishing rod. The receiver hitch was the hardest to build. It’s not easy to make a round tube square, but I hammered on, and brazed it together.
I’d like to thank my wife for the amazing detail on the driver; everyone thinks he looks like me. Thank you to Royal Distributing (Innisfil) for the use of their ATV display to capture the “Back at the Lake” pictures. I would also like to say thank you to the local club, RCCO for the support and a reason to build crawlers. |
